Introduction

If you hold a driver licence, and you're intending to travel overseas, it's advisable to apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP) in case you need to drive when you're away.

International drivers permits and license translations in Australia. If your license is not written in English, you’ll need to carry either an international drivers license (also known as an international drivers permit) or a formal translation of your overseas license. Note: Upload a copy of your photo, signature, and native driver's license. A passport photo is NOT required. If you have any difficulties uploading images, please e-mail them to customerservice@idltravel.com after you complete the application.

Many countries require you to have the IDP in addition to your Australian state or territory issued driver licence, to legally drive a car or ride a motorbike.

The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) has been authorised by the Australian government to issue IDPs, and each state or territory motoring club processes the application.

You can apply online for an IDP through the AAA's NSW member, NRMA, and if you have any queries, call the AAA on 6247 7311.

Note: Service NSW is now issuing IDPs on behalf of NRMA at the Wynyard Service Centre. You can purchase your IDP over the counter at the service centre.

Eligibility

To be eligible you must:

• be over 18 years of age
• hold a provisional or unrestricted Australian driver licence.

What you need

• your intended travel dates
• a photocopy of both sides of your Australian driver licence
• a recent passport size photo (taken no more than 6 months ago)
• your payment.

If you're applying in person at Wynyard Service Centre, you need:

• your Australian driver licence
• a recent passport size photo (pre-cut to single photoandtaken no more than 6 months ago)
• to agree to the terms and conditions
• your payment.

How to apply

1. Select the 'Apply online' button.
2. Ensure that your state is selected.
3. Select 'Start IDP online application'.
4. Fill in the required details, upload the necessary documentation, and make your payment.
5. Your IDP will be posted to you, and arrive within 5 to 7 working days.

If you don't wish to apply online, you can download and complete the Application for International Driving Permit – PDF and post your application with payment, to the details on the form. Alternatively, you can visit your nearest State motoring club.

• IDPs are United Nations sanctioned documents and will always have 'Convention on International Road Traffic of 19 September, 1949' on their cover. They are only available from State and Territory motoring clubs.
• An IDP is sometimes referred to as an international driving licence.

What is an international driver's licence?

An international driver's licence (also known as an international driver’s permit or IDP) allows you to drive overseas without further tests or applications. You will need an IDP to drive both cars and motorbikes.

Who can get one?

Anyone over the age of 18 with a full valid Australian driver's licence can apply. (No learner’s permits.)

Please note, RAC doesn't provide international driver's licences to foreign visitors to Australia. If you’re a foreign visitor, please contact the Department of Transport.

What will I need?

To apply for an International Driver's Licence, you will need a valid Australian driver's licence and a passport sized photo. Photos must not be older than 12 months and cannot be reused from previous IDP's.

When applying online, you can upload a suitable passport photo sized image from a file on your mobile device or desktop. We will print this for you free of charge, when processing the IDP application.

You can also purchase passport-sized photos at RAC Member Service and Travel Centres: $14.50 for RAC members, or $16.50 for non-members.

Where can I get an international driver's licence?

Only RAC and associated members of the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) are authorised to issue International Driver's Licences/Permit in Australia.

You can apply for an IDP:

• In person at one of our RAC Member Service Centres or at one of our RAC Travel Centres
• By post - simply download the IDP application form, ensuring you include the necessary document(s), passport photo(s) and payment details, and post it to back to us (the address is on the form).

If applying by post

Please include your return address and contact number with a clear photocopy of your current driver's licence (both sides) and an original passport sized photograph. Postal permits are processed within 24 - 48 hours of receiving your application.

Delivery depends upon the postal option you choose. In most cases you will receive your permit within 7 - 10 days. RAC is not responsible for any mail lost if posted by ordinary mail.

How much does an international driver's licence cost?

An International Driver’s Permit costs $42.00 when purchasing the IDP in person at one of our RAC Travel branches.

How long is an international driver's licence valid?

What is a carnet?

A carnet (pronounced car-nay) is essential for the temporary importation of vehicles into New Zealand and most African, Asian, Middle Eastern and South American countries. It allows visitors to import their vehicles for a limited period of time with a minimum of formalities and without the need to make a cash deposit at the frontier in local currency, equivalent to the customs duty and other taxes.
